Do You Choose To Be Happy?

In a post last week, I presented a model of the Self as one who makes choices about attitudes, emotions, and behaviors. A wonderful book, entitled How We Choose To Be Happy by Foster & Hicks, documents the choices happy people make in the face of often difficult life circumstances.

The authors interviewed hundreds of "happy people" in order to figure out what made them happy. From that interview data, the authors developed a happiness model. The first component of the model is Intention. The key question happy people ask (and answer) is this: What attitude will best enhance the quality of the experience right now? Asking this question gives us the opportunity to move from negative to positive feelings. It is an important question because it makes us pause and reflect on how we are feeling and how we want to feel. Once the desired feelings are discovered, we can choose to approach a situation differently.

Happy people report they start their day setting their intentions. These intentions might involve small tasks and activities for the day or they might involve long-term, life-altering situations.

Make a list of your most important intentions. Some examples might be: I intend to be a loving, supportive parent; I intend to spend quality time with my romantic partner; or I intend to learn something new. At the end of each intention, write "and I intend to feel happy about it."

Now, examine your list of intentions and think about how you feel about each intention. Does it feel authentic? Does it match what I've been feeling all along? If it doesn't, why haven't you had the intention to be happy?

We will continue examining the happiness model of Foster & Hicks in the next several posts!

  2. I intend to wake up before 10:00am every morning and I intend to feel happy about it.

I intend to do everything on my to-do list each and every day and I intend to feel happy about it.

I intend to walk my dog three times a day and spend some quality time with him and I intend to feel happy about it.

I intend to spend time with my fiance and laugh with him and I intend to be happy about it.

I intend to find ways to enjoy my job and I intend to feel happy about it.

I intend to manage my time effectively to go to school full time and work two jobs and feel happy about it.

My list of intentions all feel authentic besides one. I do feel happy about waking up by 10:00am at the latest so my day isn't wasted. I also feel happy about doing everything on my to-do list. It gives me a sense of accomplishment. I do enjoy my job even though as a whole I don't care for what I am doing. I find things about my job to enjoy. I've just recently overcome this a few months ago. I love spending time with my fiance and laughing with him. This is the highlight of my day. Lastly, so far this semester I have done a great job of managing my time so I don't feel stressed about school or work, and I feel happy about that!

Out of my list of intentions the only one that does not feel authentic is walking my dog three times a day. We do not have a backyard and I live on the third story of a house, so walking the dog is a major chore. I love my dog very much, but since it is so cold out lately I've dreaded this chore even more so. I haven't made the intention to be happy about it because I think that I've found so many aspects that I don't like about it that I've managed to convince myself that walking him is not enjoyable for both me and him. Today I am going to bundle up more and set aside extra time to walk him and see if I can be happy walking the dog all three times today.

I intend to make a difference in young children's lives and I intend to feel happy about it.

These are the goals I have and intend to accomplish in my future. I really is a good feeling to actually get them down in writting to realize that I actually am going to accomplish these things and they in turn will make me happy!!

I made my list of intentions and I'm pretty happy about them! I don't know if I can look at every situation and change my attitude about it but I think it would be worth a shot. I usually see myself as a pretty happy person but I know I have my days that I could do better. I look forward to learning more about the Happiness Model and finding ways to apply it to my own life.

  5. I couldn't agree more with this question of topic. Do you choose to be happy? Most Definately! I feel that everyone has choices to make in life and being happy is an important one.

I intend to be the best wife and mother I can be and spend as much quality time that is possible with my family and I intend to feel happy about it.

I intend to work hard at school and get all A's and B's so that I can graduate with honors from UofL with my BS and I intend to feel happy about it.

I intend to obtain my MAT from UofL as soon as I complete my BS and I intend to feel happy about it.

I intend to eat healthy and learn to cook new meals so that my family can stay healthy as well and I intend to feel happy about it.

I intend to work out more so that I can stay physically fit and keep my children active as well to teach them this concept as well and I intend to feel happy about it.

I feel that all of these goals are very authentic and obtainable and I intend to feel happy about it.

I found this exercise quite enjoyable. I have a list of resolutions I made at the start of the new year and added "and I intend to feel happy about it" and it totally changed my perspective. Sometimes the way your mind associates somewhat difficult tasks makes them seem less favorable than they really are. However, adding a positive spin on my resolutions makes them seem more exciting rather than something I dread. Working out is a big one for me. I have always understood the importance of regular exercise and try to work out routinely, but it is so much more of a chore than something I look forward to. Though, if I look at working out as something fun to do that makes me feel great afterward and something I can be happy about, it's so much easier to do.

  7. I intend to enjoy being single and mot "worry" about being the single one in my circle of friends and I intend feel happy about it.

I intend to practice yoga more often and I intend to feel happy about it.

I intend to wake up before 9:30 on my days off work and I intend to feel happy about it.

I intend to strengthen my work relationships and I intend to feel happy about it.

I intend to take out more time during the day for me and to relax and I intend to feel happy about it.

All of the items on my list are things that I would definitely like to accomplish and that are attainable.

The most difficult tasks for me will be waking up "early" on my days off and taking out "me" time daily. I know that when I slept till noon (or this weekend I slept till 1!) I feel as if I've wasted my day - then I'm rushing and stressed trying to accomplish all that I need to do that day. If I can dedicate myself to getting up at a reasonable time, even on my days off, then I know it will make the completion of my other goals easier.

  8. I intend to graduate from UofL with honors.

I intend to continue working out and choosing to make better health-conscious decisions.

I intend to continue working to provide for myself and my family at any cost.

I consider myself to have a somewhat cheery disposition. I have worked hard and have had to overcome many obstacles to get where I am today. When I look at my list, I feel that all these intentions are clear and obtainable. I can't say that I am always happy when choosing a chicken salad over a Hardee's thickburger, however, I know that this decision will allow me to achieve my fitness goals- which in turn will make me happy. The aforementioned intentions are at the root of most of my decisions. Being happy is relative; never absolute and always in relation to something else. I feel that I am pretty happy, good music helps. I have, and often do, get upset, angry, and even furious. However, I still approach things with an "It'll all work out" mentality.

  9. My girlfriend recently got done with this book and I will read it very soon. I had her sit with me and talk about the book an what she had got from the text. She went on to say just like you that you being happy is just you intending on being happy not actually going through the process of whatever you thought was going to make you happy. For example I think going to the pool would make me happy, well what makes me happy is the intent of going to the pool and not actually being at the pool.

  10. I intend to wake up at 7:10am to make it to work on time and be happy about it.

I intend on graduating from UofL and go back for my masters and be glad about it.

I intend on working out 4 days out of the week to gain 20 pounds of muscle and will be happy about it.

A person who smiles and lives joyfully usually has a beautiful day. The intentions stated will each help in the long run. Arriving to work on time will show my dedication and in time be promoted for my efforts/hardwork. Graduating and attempting to go back to school speaks for it self. Working out is always healthy.

  11. I intend to finish u of L and I intend to feel happy about it.
I intend to be great friend even when we disagree and I intend to feel happy about it.
I intend to wake up every morning when I supposed to and I intend to feel happy about it.
I intend to listen to my parents and I intend to feel happy about it.
I intend to have a family later in life, even if it really dosen't happen, and I intend to feel happy about it.
I intend to be able to provide for myself in life and I intend to feel happy about it.
I intend to be loved and I intend to feel happy about it.
I intend to go to the gym as much as I can and feel happy about it.
I intend to appreciate myself and feel happy about it.

I try to wake up everyday with a positive attitude. I agree that when I have a list of accomplishable goals and they are met it definetly makes me feel happy. Only you are capable of having a positive, happy attitude.
If something upsets me, which always occur, I just try to stand tall and shake it off. If I'm having a rough day, I try to never let it show and ruin anyone else's day.

Looking back on the list I've made it does feel authentic. The list has been long overdue and I feel like now is as good of a time as any to start making those much needed changes and meeting goals. I intend to be happy about it!

  13. I made my list of intentions and actually hung them beside my bedroom door, so that each morning when I wake up and get ready for the day, I can be reminded of them and my feeling towards them. I have always thought of myself as a happy person, but as I have grown older and became busier and busier I find that I have less time to just enjoy life. My number one intention is to take each experience and instead of dwelling on the stressful ones accept that they are a part of me. I am intending to be happy doing this, and I know this will be my most difficult intention.

It is not always easy to feel happy about things you must do in life but do not particularly want to do.

I just got married and I totally intend to feel happy about it - very authentic.

I am going to take a new job that I am unsure of and I intend to feel happy about it - hard to feel authentic about this.

I am going to begin my workout training again and I intend to feel happy about it - also authentic

I am going to work very hard on my studies over the next year and I intend to feel happy about it - authentic.

I intend to sell my company and I intend to feel happy about it - authentic.

The only unauthentic item on my list is an undertaking that I must do to survive and pay bills. With the economy in peril, I am lucky to have a job opportunity at all. But considering this job is not my "passion", how do I intend to be happy about it on a daily basis if does not make me happy? Or, is this where I look at the other intentions in my life and focus on those instead of the unauthentic intention on my list? I would regard myself as a particularly happy person that can deal with just about any situation, and I know that life is made up of many things that we do not want to do, but it is our perspective on the situation that will carry us through.

I intend to enjoy each day like its my last.
I intend to respect my friendship that I have.
I intend to enjoy my last semester at the University.
I intend to be a good person daily and respect others.

I try to live my the things that I have just mentioned because they are true to my life. I am grateful for the opportunties that I have, and I need to work hard to achieve my goals. It is not very hard to live by these intentions and I hope that I continue to do so.
I intend to be grateful for the opportunties that I have.
I intend to thank God everyday for my health and my family's health.
I intend to be the best athlete that I can be.
I intend to work hard everyday to achieve my goals.

  17. I intend to be a great friend and lover to my girlfriend.

I intend to get a college degree.

I intend to be a successful actor.

I intend to be a likeable person.

    I intend to be healthy.

... and i intend to feel happy about it.

I feel that my intentions are authentic. I think that accomplishing these things would make me happy because these are my dreams and aspirations. Accomplishing them would make feel happy because I would be proud of myself for the hard work that I put into them. I also know that others would be proud of me for completing these goals which would also in turn make me feel good. I think that if you try hard to complete the tasks in the way of you your goals then you will feel very good about it in the end. However, I also feel that happiness can come in many different forms, not just from completing goals. I think you can be happy just doing things that you enjoy, such as playing basketball or riding a four wheeler.

I intend to find a healty way to drop ten pounds, and I intend to be happy about it.

I intend to buy that vido camera I've been wanting, and embark on my new movie hobby, and be happy about it.

I intend to find a me that is someone my family, friends, and self can be proud of, and I intend to be happy with it.

Wow in staying with the whole New Years idea this was great. I actually looked at all these at the end, and felt fairly genuine about all of them. Unlike the usually nEw Years resolution where I set the bar too high on things. For example my resolutions usually sound something like 'I resolve to cure cancer, drop fifty pounds, run a triathlon...twice, and start pooping ice cream' or some ridiculous stuff I know in my heart of heart would take a miracle to be achieved, especially when I have trouble with the basic concepts of punctuality, and organization. Looking at this list I think I can acheve these , by puting forth a little bit of extra effort. The ony one that seems daunting is the last one, as that is kind of an ongoing task to find myself.

  19. I intend to graduate from UofL and I intend to be happy about it.

I intend to work hard at my internship and I intend to be happy about it.

I intend to be a great boyfriend, son, brother, and friend and I intend to be happy about it.

I intend to push through my fears and I intend to be happy about it.

I have all these intentions that I plan on fulfilling and sometimes it is difficult to stay happy and stay on course. I know when I am happy it is easier for me to fulfill my intentions. Sometimes I'm not happy about it because I forget why I am doing what it is I am doing or why. So if I keep reminding myself why I am doing whatever it is I am doing at that time, then it will change my attitude.

First of all I am going to figure out how to Blog. I am so new to this and I'm not sure what I'm doing. I had previously blogged or thought I had but I'm not sure if I'm doing them correctly. Anyway for this I will start out saying I will learn to blog correctly and get the needed points for it so I can hopefully pass this great class.
I will get more physical activity such as walking and doing my Wii fitness, it's a good way to exercise and have fun.
I will take better care of myself and allow more time for me.
I will try to stop worrying so much about my Mom and her health.
I will try to write daily on my songwriting and hopefully one day have a big hit.
When you sit down and try to think about all you really want to accomplish in life it's kind of hard. I just want to strive to be a better person, continue to help my family and friends and enjoy my life with my kids, grandkids and my dogs.

  21. I believe that life in general is a balancing act. Life has a strange way of knocking you down at times, and we must all get up and dust ourselves off. Life teaches us that when you are down it is important to get back, and try it again. What ever made you fall will not keep you down forever. This happens to me a lot when I play basketball. I may have a good game or practice then the next day maybe terrible. It is important for me not to get down on myself but my confidence is very important. I have to forget the game before and just remember that this is a different day. I think the same can be said for life. We all have bad days but when we wake up its a new day. Forget about the day before and keep going because today is going to be better. I try to live by that saying because I don't like to dwell on the past. I am trying my best to remain happy and stay positive even when live throws me a curve ball.
